Professionals and Used Medical Equipments

Every hospital, be it big or small requires medical equipments to give their patients the best treatment possible. Some of them have to buy sending hand medical equipments due to various reasons like lack of money or fewer resources. The medical equipments which were used by big hospitals would be sold off the small ones when they get new ones.

The process of acquiring used medical equipments has been going on for years. Some of the equipments are also passed around several hospitals; this may refer to, for example, a laser machine for cosmetic purposes being rotated among many clinics. The clinics would have to pay a nominal fee for the machine to the owner.

Though all these are common occurrences, you may find that these are not exactly approved by the people in the medical profession. There may be many professionals, who are skeptic about using used medical equipments on their patients. They argue that after years of being used by other hospitals the equipments may have become fatigued and won’t work as smoothly as a new one.

There may be some truth in what they say and in some cases false. The medical equipments are made with utmost care and planning so that it has a long life and will be able to work as efficiently as it does when it is first made to work. These equipments can be made from high quality materials which last long and can be used even after long years after a few fixing up here and there.

Having medical equipment is not a minor thing. It is a very valuable piece of equipment. Don’t be worried about he competency of the machine as the hospitals won’t put it up unless they are sure that it is working properly. So you may keep your worries aside and take treatments confidently.

Even Medical Personnel can Benefit from Free Ringtones

Just because medical personnel wear scrubs most of the time doesn’t mean there’s not some strong personalities hidden beneath those otherwise plain clothes. Sure, colors have been added to the medical staff’s old familiar hue of aqua and white. Now, it’s not uncommon to see a seemingly flamboyant, red clothed body moving down the hallway of a hospital. No, it’s not a clown headed for the children’s section to bring some much needed cheer – it’s just another shade presently available to those medical professionals who want to display a bit of personality.

Doctors spend years studying to arrive at their final destination, with an ability to heal others from what ails them. That doesn’t mean they’re not colorful, lively, interesting people. In fact, many medical careerists are highly creative people, able to think, learn, and improvise on the fly. These skill sets are particularly suited to staff who work in emergency rooms, where fast action, rather than deep contemplation and study, is the thing that saves lives. And so, as the medical profession seems to catch up to other professions in terms of personality displays, the overall appearance may be a bit less sterile than in the past.

Doctors might well be seen with different hairstyles, such as a ponytail on a male doctor, rather than the old standby of closely cropped hair. Doctors have even taken it upon themselves to add a bit of personality to their cell phones, by taking advantage of offers for the occasional free ringtone to jazz up the out of the box options, which are sometimes quite limited. While there probably won’t be a trend anytime soon which finds doctors or nurses gravitating toward monster trucks to drive to work, these other smaller displays of creativity and personality are definitely arriving to help keep these working professionals in the style loop!

Things You Should Not Buy Used

Injections are one of many ways to administer ...

Image via Wikipedia

Though there are medical devices and accessories that you can easily purchase used, there are some things that you will want to definitely get new. Because of possible health issues, there are quite a few things that you will not want to get used.

One thing that is fairly obvious would be anything that has to do with blood, or poking yourself. For example, you don’t want to buy syringes used. This is extremely detrimental, and potentially life threatening. If someone is offering to sell used syringes, you may want to consider letting authorities know, as this is not only dangerous, but in a lot of places, it is illegal.

Buying something like a diabetic glucose monitor second hand could be considered dangerous. Though there is little likelihood that it would be contaminated, many people are concerned about this. Because of this, these are usually highly suggested to be purchased new, rather than used.

Clothing that is used for medical reasons should generally be bought new. For example, circulation hose, or circulation socks are something that most people are going to be more comfortable with purchasing new. In most cases, there is not a medical reason to purchase them new, but most people do not feel comfortable buying them used. Along with this would be sheets for a bed. Many beds that are used for medical purposes, such as those in hospitals, require a certain size and type of sheet. Purchasing these used, while not necessarily a bad thing, can be uncomfortable for many people.

Many people find it easier to purchase some medical equipment new, rather than used. For example, finding crutches that are the right size may be more difficult to find used, rather than to just head to the pharmacy. No matter if you buy used or new, knowing what is safe to buy used and what is better to buy new is important.

Medical Equipment Can be Vital to Life

Medical equipment can be everything from crutches to oxygen tanks, and anything in between. For  most people, medical equipment is something that helps them get around. For other people, it’s essential that they have this equipment. They need it to live, and if they don’t have it, they will die. This is why some people pass away when the power in their area is out for an extended period, because they can’t get the lifesaving oxygen that they need or they have equipment that doesn’t work and that they have to have to survive.
If you’re going to be buying medical equipment, it’s vital that you do your research. Whether you buy new or used will be up to you, but you’ll need to make sure that you’re getting the right item for your needs. When it comes to lifesaving types of medical equipment, buying new is generally a better option. You don’t want something that’s been heavily used, because you can’t be sure how it was treated and how much longer it’s going to last. Don’t bet your life on something like that. Of course, it’s possible for brand new equipment to malfunction, too, but it’s much less likely.
With new equipment, you may also be able to get a warranty that would get someone out to your house to fix the problem right away, so you wouldn’t be as much at risk. Weigh the pros and cons carefully, and talk to your family about what they would recommend as the best option. Talk to your doctor, too, so you can get a medical professional’s point of view on what you should purchase when it comes to medical equipment. You’ll have the highest chance of getting what you really need when you learn about all of the options first.

Medical Equipment for Children

Pediatric polysomnography patient, Children's ...
Image via Wikipedia

It’s not only adults who need medical equipment. A lot of children need it, too, because of accidents or chronic conditions that they have to deal with. If you’re the parent of a child who needs medical equipment, it’s important that you find the right equipment in the right size. In other words, don’t buy adult-sized equipment unless your child is very nearly grown. Small children need medical equipment, like crutches and wheelchairs, that are made for their smaller bodies. That way they’ll still have maneuverability and they can get something larger as they grow if their condition persists long enough to require that.

You should also be sensitive to your child’s emotional and mental needs when getting medical equipment. Some of it can seem very intimidating, and you don’t want to frighten your child. It’s enough of a scare to have a medical problem, even if it’s a temporary one. When you couple the physical issue with mental or emotional anguish, things can be even harder to deal with. Talk to your child about the equipment. Explain how it works and why it’s necessary. The more understanding your child has – within age-appropriate reason, of course – the better off he or she will be when it comes to conquering a fear of the medical equipment.

If you have to talk about your child’s condition in a way that might seem frightening to your little one, it’s better to do it at a time when your child isn’t right there. You don’t want to do anything that could make the fear worse. It’s better to stay positive, and say positive things, even if the reason for the medical equipment is serious and/or chronic. Helping your child stay positive is very important for quality of life.

Medicine Bottles

As the medical industry continues to grow and expand, more and more patients need medicine bottles for use at their home. There are so many patients these days that are prescribed more than one medication who need to manage their pills so that they do not mix them up and cause harm to themselves. Patients, just like pharmacies and doctors, can order medicine bottles and pill organizers from various websites on the World Wide Web. These items can also be purchased at pharmacies or department stores across the country. These pill organizers and bottles are not too expensive to purchase since they are made of plastic and cost almost nothing to produce.

Doctors and nurses recommend the use of medication organizers and medicine bottles for patients who are taking more than one medication for their various health issues. Using these products makes it easier for the patients to manage their pills, know what days they need to take which pill, know when it is time for a refill and so much more. These organizers and bottles do not take up much space either. They can be small enough to fit in a woman’s purse, small enough to fit in a shirt’s front pocket, and not take up much counter space at all.

The most popular medicine organizer on the market today is the calendar box. It is a long rectangular shaped box that has seven compartments. Each compartment is marked for one day of the week. The patient can separate their pills based on which ones they need to take each day of the week. This means that there should be no medication confusion ever again. Refill the box once per week, making sure that each day has the correct pills in it and the correct number of pills in them.

IV Machines

The medical industry relies on various pieces of equipment to make their patients feel comfortable when sitting in a hospital bed or while being prepped for surgery. One of those machines, which is used to pump medication into a patient, is the IV machine. The IV machine, which is short for intravenous therapy. The medication is in the form of a liquid and it comes in a large bag that is hooked up to the machine. The machine is then hooked up to the patient through one of their veins, allowing the medication to gain direct access to the patient’s blood supply through the vein. IV treatments are particularly important for patients who are suffering from diabetes, heart failure, kidney failure, liver problems, dehydration and who are on life support.

An IV machine is used to correct some of the following problems:

  • Electrolyte imbalances
  • Blood transfusions
  • Fluid replacement
  • Delivery of medications

There are some liquid medications that can only be given to patients using an IV machine even though they are liquid. These liquids cannot be ingested through the mouth because they need to be placed directly into the blood stream using the veins in the body for instant access. IV machines can be found in hospital emergency rooms, hospital intensive care units, ambulances, and even in doctor offices across the country. Some patients who are sick at home on hospice care can have IV machines delivered to their home as part of the hospice care package. The medication can also be delivered by the hospice care company when the hospice nurse visits the patient at their home once per week. There are IV machines that permit for a single IV line into the patient’s body and there are IV machines that permit for multiple IV lines into the patient’s body.

X-Rays and Health

X-rays are an important part of the medical field when it comes to determining whether or not people have broken bones, blood clots, tumors, cavities and other medical conditions. X-rays are used commonly across the country by millions of doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel. X-rays have helped to save lives over the past handful of decades by detecting tumors at an early stage. X-rays have also helped doctors determine the proper course of treatment for cancer patients and patients who have broken, shattered, or fractured bones. It is important though for doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to examine each use of an x-ray on a patient so that the patient is not exposed to a large amount of cumulative radiation during their lifetime.

Hundreds of studies have been conducted over the past couple of decades regarding x-rays and the effect that radiation exposure has on the health of patients. Many of the studies have concluded that exposure to radiation does not increase the risk of developing cancer. Studies have found that there is no difference in the radiation people get from nature and the radiation people are exposed to by x-rays in terms of causing problems within the body or developing cancer. There are, on the other hand, two major hazards caused by exposure to x-rays. The two hazards caused by exposure to x-rays include the following:

• Damage to some cells: only a small amount of cells can be damaged and they will die prematurely.
• Genetic damage to reproductive cells: damage to an ovum in a woman or a sperm cell in a man can lead to a deformed baby or a miscarriage.

The cells in unborn children are growing rapidly, which means that they are incredibly sensitive to radiation from x-rays. The dose of radiation that an unborn child can be subjected to is regulated by United States Federal standards. The standards say that unborn children cannot be exposed to more than 0.5 rem during a nine month pregnancy. In layman’s terms, that number would equate to 10 x-rays during the pregnancy.

Laboratory Equipment

The medical world has become so advanced these days that doctors who perform tests on patients can send blood work samples to a local laboratory for analyzing. The results of these tests take roughly five to seven days to be returned to the doctor, who can then look into them and inform the patient what is going on with their body. Doctors will order blood work for a variety of reasons including fatigue, dehydration, loss of sight, loss of voice and many other symptoms. Blood work is also performed to determine one’s heart health, their cholesterol levels, and whether or not they have cancer.

A laboratory in the medical industry that analyzes blood work for doctors and hospitals typically needs a specific type of equipment for the process to take place. One of those machines needed is known as a Centrifuge. A Centrifuge is operated using an electric engine. The blood sample is placed inside the machine and is spun on a fixed axis, which applies a force that is perpendicular to the axis. Once the machine is done running results can be printed out about the blood sample, allowing the lab to forward these results to the doctor, who then can interpret them relating to the patient.

Another piece of equipment necessary in a medical laboratory is the hematology analyzer. This piece of equipment is vitally important for a medical laboratory to run successfully. A hematology analyzer analyzes the blood cell count of a blood sample sent in by a doctor or hospital. This machine helps to rule out anemia and infection while also monitoring the blood cell count of a cancer patient in the middle of his or her treatments. Most medical laboratories and hospitals would not be able to operate successfully without a hematology analyzer because of the results it provides medical staffers.

EKG Machine

James Albert Bonsack's cigarette rolling machi...

The medical industry relies on different types of equipment to diagnose and treat patients who come into doctor’s offices and hospital emergency rooms all across the country. The patients might visit for one reason or another such as cancer, broken bones, asthma attacks, diabetes and heart problems. Doctors and nurses alike use the EKG machine to test the heart of a patient complaining of heart palpitations, chest pains, and other symptoms of heart problems. An EKG machine is hooked up to the patient and then tests are run by the machine, determining different values of the heart’s production and whether or not a heart attack has occurred.

EKG is short for electrocardiography, which measures the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time. The information is recorded by using skin electrodes. There are a handful of lines attached to the patient’s bare skin with round endings. They are attached to the patient in ten different areas covering the majority of the body. One is attached to each wrist and one is attached to each ankle. The other six are attached across the chest of the patient and then to the EKG machine. The machine determines the information about the heart by amplifying the electrical charges that appear on the skin when the heart depolarises when the heart beats.

The very first EKG procedure occurred in 1872 at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital by Alexander Muirhead. Muirhead is credited with attaching wires to a patient’s wrists who had a fever to obtain the heartbeat of the patient. The ten electrodes connected to the patient’s body must be placed on the body avoiding any bony prominences. If the electrodes are placed on bony prominences then the reading will not be completely accurate and will need to be performed a second time, costing more money.
