A hospital is a place which deals with various types of equipments and machines. They have to spend plenty of money to acquire these and the working of each of these saves a patients life if not give them vital treatment. The biomedical equipments keep the patients strong and give them a chance to live their life like they used to before their disease struck them.

Although there are many types of biomedical equipments, a few are seen quite commonly in all the hospitals. Most of the equipments have sensors and are used to detect a problem in the body of the patient. They work on electric power, though there may be still some medical equipment which works through mechanical power that was found years earlier.

The biomedical equipments commonly seen are the ECG, ventilators, oxygen mask and similar ones. The ECG is a sensor which senses the way the heart is working and gives a graph relating to the electrical characteristics of the heart. From this graph you can determine the problem, as each dip and rise have a unique meaning to it which helps to determine whether everything is normal or not.

The ventilators are seen in the ICUs where patients who are in critical conditions stay. The ventilator is usually put as a last resort in some cases, but in most it is used to aid the patient to breathe so that he can keep on living. There are equipments which do not work on electricity like the sphygmomanometer which is used to determine the blood pressure of the patient.

Another type of equipment is the stethoscope which is used to hear the breathing of the patient. All these constitute the variety of equipments classified as the bio-medical equipments. Each one has its own purpose and is used to help a person lead a healthy life as is capable of him.

This amazing little website has become a very powerful tool both for buying and selling used items. You can easily find medical equipment or accessories at a fraction of the cost by heading to Craigslist.

One thing you will want to make sure that you do when you go to Craigslist is to look at cities that are close to you. This makes it much easier to get the items that you are trying to buy. Many times, the people that sell on craigslist do not want to ship the items, they would rather you come pick them up.

Once you get to Craigslist, you may feel a little overwhelmed, especially if you have never been there before. Many people debate about whether they should buy their medical equipment used or new. There are pros and cons to both sides of the debate. Knowing your options for both, and understanding them fully, is an important step to deciding if you are going to buy your medical equipment new or used.

Used medical equipment is, just as it sounds like, used. Sometimes these will have been used by individuals, and other times, they may have been used in hospitals and clinics. Knowing where your used medical equipment is coming from is very important. You may feel more comfortable that it is up to par, if the equipment is coming from the hospital, but it may have been used less if it is coming from an individual. Used medical equipment is generally going to cost you less money, but you probably won’t be able to get a guarantee with it. In fact, you may not even be able to get a user’s guide when you buy it. For many pieces of equipment, these things are not that important. Saving money on your items can be a huge reason for buying your medical equpiment used.

Buying new is going to be a lot more expensive. Many people feel that the piece of mind that they get with purchasing a new item, though, is worth the price. Though there are medical devices and accessories that you can easily purchase used, there are some things that you will want to definitely get new. Because of possible health issues, there are quite a few things that you will not want to get used.

One thing that is fairly obvious would be anything that has to do with blood, or poking yourself. For example, you don’t want to buy syringes used. This is extremely detrimental, and potentially life threatening. If someone is offering to sell used syringes, you may want to consider letting authorities know, as this is not only dangerous, but in a lot of places, it is illegal.

Buying something like a diabetic glucose monitor second hand could be considered dangerous. Though there is little likelihood that it would be contaminated, many people are concerned about this. Because of this, these are usually highly suggested to be purchased new, rather than used.

Clothing that is used for medical reasons should generally be bought new. For example, circulation hose, or circulation socks are something that most people are going to be more comfortable with purchasing new. In most cases, there is not a medical reason to purchase them new, but most people do not feel comfortable buying them used. Along with this would be sheets for a bed. Many beds that are used for medical purposes, such as those in hospitals, require a certain size and type of sheet. For example, finding crutches that are the right size may be more difficult to find used, rather than to just head to the pharmacy. The specification is not mandatory however, most medical equipment production companies are working toward meeting this standard due to the liabilities that may arise from not meeting it. Also, they do not want to lose sales from competitors that follow the standard.

The IEC 60601-1-8 Standard

IEC 60601-1-8 is an international standard specifying safety and performance requirements as well as testing of medical device alarm systems. The standard consists of 71 pages and includes visual and audible alarms with the majority of specifications relating to the latter. The specification covers all functions from the medical conditions that should trip the alarm to the wavelength frequency and shape. This information reviews the most important topics in detail.

The Classification of Alarm Priorities

Before an alarm sounds, the priority of the medical condition must be assigned. The IEC 60601-1-8 discusses which conditions should be classified as high, medium and low priority. The classification is based on the result of failure to respond and the speed at which harm may befall a patient. The highest priority is death or irreversible injury. A low priority indicates minor injury or discomfort from the patient. The equipment designer must decide which conditions takes precedence over others. Range of Audible Alarm Costs

Like any type of product, there is high cost, low cost and midrange cost options. This is no exception for medical device manufacturers. The alarm within medical equipment can vary depending on the technology associated with the device. Higher cost options within the alarm system could be absorbed easily since buyers are already expecting to pay a premium price. However, for lower cost manufacturers adding a high cost component could raise the price of the overall device by a few percent which could be significant.

The High Cost Route

The high cost option meets all requirements set forth by the IEC 60601-1-8 international standard. The high cost choice usually contains a microcontroller or microprocessor which outputs a complicated signal producing the frequency and four harmonic sounds to satisfy the IEC 60601-1-8 requirement. To be loud enough, the alarm speaker must be large and contain audio processors and powerful electronic components. This option takes tremendous proficiency and time to develop.

The Low Cost Route

An alternate option is to produce the four harmonic sounds acoustically with the low cost option. This is accomplished by placing a speaker in an acoustic chamber. The user must apply a sine wave and the four harmonics are naturally produced in the chamber. An example of this can be found when an individual blows into a wooden train whistle. The output is several sound frequencies simultaneously. Also, this method allows the user to significantly increase the volume also through acoustics.

Meeting the IEC60601-1-8 Requirements

In order to meet the requirements of this standard, cost is a significant factor. The more expensive the internal alarm, the improved chance the medical device will meet the requirements of the specification. The key for medical device manufacturers to keep costs down is to produce these finished products in the most efficient manner possible.

Medical equipment can be everything from crutches to oxygen tanks, and anything in between. For  most people, medical equipment is something that helps them get around. For other people, it’s essential that they have this equipment. They need it to live, and if they don’t have it, they will die. Whether you buy new or used will be up to you, but you’ll need to make sure that you’re getting the right item for your needs. When it comes to lifesaving types of medical equipment, buying new is generally a better option.
