Based in Denver, CO the site is bare bones with photos and information; no messing around with decoration or artwork. They boast of buying over 80 truckloads of used medical equipment each year, then they refurbish and sell it.

Medical-Supplies-Equipment-Company.com – Sells aids for daily living for professionals and patients. Huge selection and they offer financing.

HotFrog.com – Your Used Medical Supply Directory. If they don’t have it, someone they know does. This one provides maps to locations in major cities and has good testimonials.

There’s just so much out there and many of them are honest, reputable businesses, but be careful, too. Unfortunately, some people make their living by stealing your money online.

If selling gently used medical equipment, it can be posted on the forum-like message boards and literally thousands of people who deal in medical equipment will see it. And the reverse, if looking for good second-hand medical equipment, the need can be posted in the forums and people who are selling whatever it is will contact the poster via email.

Donate Used Medical Equipment to the Sick and Needy

Posting an ad offering used medical equipment will find the right person quickly. And if there’s a need for the equipment, just scan the ads to see if any are posted. If not, post a want ad, then give it time, as many Freecycle users only get to look at the ads on weekends.

The posts are all time/date stamped. They do like new-comers to make their first post one that’s giving something away. Find something around the house that isn’t being used and post it. Be honest about the description and don’t forget to put what neighborhood it’s in.

A quick look-over the potential new chair is necessary. Is it ugly? Is it worn too much for consideration? Does it look abused? The first general impression can tell one whether to bother looking closer or not.

Next, notice if it’s clean. Is there gunk in the joints/seams of parts on the arms, wheels, seat connections and everywhere else? This can give an idea of the kind of care that particular chair has had, so if it isn’t clean, more careful observations are needed. See if parts are wearing out and what will have to be replaced.

Refurbish; Make an old Wheelchair new Again

Don’t be surprised if the seating isn’t exactly what is wanted, and don’t despair. There are lots of companies that offer chair replacements that are complete chairs, or chair materials, depending on what type the chair is. Measure how wide the chair is and see if it will fit until a new one can be ordered. Look for that online.

Move all the movable parts. Do they operate easily? Do they look in good condition? Do the locking parts lock and unlock? What about the brakes, are they in good condition? Test them out. How about the wheels? It’s good to have the knowledge of a price-range for replaceable items, so a total estimate of the refurbishment can be drawn.

It can be good to take someone along when going to see the wheelchair for the first time. It’s not as easy for someone to talk a customer into buying if there’s another person listening intently. And, we can’t think of everything ourselves.

Use common sense and look for deals.

Minivans seem to be very popular, but, they just don’t last when used with a wheelchair lift. The wheelchair lift was too heavy for it and it was ruining the tie rods, too. We bought them a full-size Ford F250 with a hydraulic lift and it’s worked perfect since the day we brought it home. Joyce C. in Montana says she’s been using her hydraulic lift for fifteen years without a single problem. Thomas in California adds that he went through three electric lift motors before he finally went hydraulic. Now, he never has to worry about it. 2nd-Hand Hydraulic Lifts are Good

People with small electric motors on their lifts report constant problems and say the motor cannot do the job, motor after motor. It’s common to find someone who’s had this happen.

There are the ‘under the vehicle’ lifts, which are nice because they don’t take up precious space inside the vehicle. However, it does affect ground clearance, which is likely to present a problem in the future because they collect dirt and debris. Curb-side parking is a problem because when deployed the lift comes straight off the side, hitting the curb.

Interior lifts – the newer ones are better at taking up as little interior room as possible. Be sure to select the ‘dual-post’ model; dual post, meaning there are two support brackets inside the vehicle. Over time the one-post lift will begin to lean toward the side that doesn’t have a support post.

Shop around and ask questions.

The nebulizer unit, should be cleaned between each use. It’s parts come off easily and go back together.

First of all make sure the unit is unplugged from the wall. Stow the cord in it’s slot if the machine has one. Remove the plastic tubing and the medicine cup and take all the parts apart.

With a warm, damp cloth, wipe down all the surfaces of the nebulizer unit. Be sure to get in all the little cracks and around the switch. Use a fingernail if possible and necessary.

Clean Used Medical Equipment Between Each Use

Fill the sink or a bowl with hot, soapy water. Now take all the parts of the breathing apparatus and put them in the bowl to wash. Swish them around, making sure water gets into all the nooks and crannies. Be certain all residue and medicine has been washed out of the cup.

Run warm water through the pieces, being sure to get all the soapy water out. Hold one end of the plastic tubing up to the faucet of running water and rinse out the inside of the length of tubing, letting the water run out the other end.

Pick up the plastic pieces one at a time and shake all the water possible out of them. Set them on a towel to air dry the rest of the way. Take the tubing and hold it by one end, then quickly twirl it around by the one end, having centrifugal force send the water out the other end. Set on the towel with the rest of the pieces to air dry.

Soon the pieces should all be dry, and it’s okay to put them back together to be ready for the next use.

For foot spas with a whirlpool, air-jet basin or pipeless foot spa, or any other circulating spa follow these directions.

1.) Take off the filter screen, the inlet jets and all other removable parts from the basin. Clean out anything that may have been trapped within those parts or underneath them.
2.) Using a scrub brush and hot soapy water, scrub the parts until they’re all clean, following manufacturer instructions if they’ve been supplied.
3.) Rinse off the parts with clean, clear water and then replace them in the basin.
4.) Fill the basin with hot water and add the recommended EPA-registered hospital disinfectant. Follow the label instructions.
5.) Turn the basin on and allow the water with the cleaner to circulate through the system for at least 10 minutes, or whatever the label says. The whirlpool mechanism must be operating for complete disinfection of piping and all internal parts.
6.) After disinfection, drain the basin and allow it to air dry.

For basins without circulation, or simple basins:

1.) Drain the basin and clean out any visible dirt or debris.
2.) Fill the basin with hot, soapy water and scrub the bowl clean with a brush. Disinfect after washing with an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant, following the manufacturer’s guidelines. Disinfectant must stay wet on the surfaces for 10 minutes (or what the time the label says) to completely disinfect unit.
4.) Drain and rinse unit, and allow to air dry.

To care for both the Aircast and the foot, remove the Aircast for a short period at least once a day to let the skin breathe (and let the boot air out). During this time, the foot should be washed and towel-dried, allowing it to completely air dry. A clean inner sock should replace the worn one each day, as well.

As With any Medical Equipment, Care for Your Aircast

Sometimes medical equipment comes with its own instructions on cleaning the apparatus. If so, follow them. If not, then here’s what to do.

First, a warning: Do not walk around without the Aircast while cleaning it. Further injury can occur, and a clean Aircast isn’t worth that; get everything needed before sitting down to do this.

1.) Get a bowl of hot, soapy water and a sponge.
2.) Remove the Aircast and the inner sock.
3.) With the sponge, wash down the inside and outside of the boot. Pay special attention to the joints of parts and use a fingernail, if necessary.
4.) Rinse the sponge until it’s thoroughly clear of any soap residue, squeeze it out and use it to wipe down the inside and outside of the boot, again, rinsing sponge frequently.
5.) Repeat one more time to ensure removal of all soap residue.
6.) Allow to completely air dry.

The inner sock should be washed with normal laundry detergent and with other laundry, or, hand wash it in the sink, making sure to rinse very well. Have a clean one for at least every other day.

Here’s a couple of ideas for fun things to do with children who have to wear a cast. Do them one each day or do them both in one day, but they’re guaranteed to take the child’s mind off the broken limb and put attention on the cast in a fun way. Gather these:

#Get a few packages of different colors and hues (pastels and neon colors) in markers
#Stickers
#Scissors
#A chop stick or other long thin item that’s not sharp
#Tape

Fun Crafts For Kids With a Cast

The first project is the easiest to explain; use the markers to make designs and pictures all over the cast. Offer help and use good imagination, and make colorful paisley-type designs, or maybe a plaid, or maybe put flames on it. This can take a while, especially knowing it has to be decided what to make on the cast. Then, when all the ink is dry, use the stickers to further decorate it.

The next project: Have the child draw two pictures that are about four inches tall and 2 inches or so wide. They can both be the same picture if the child wants, or not. Have them color the picture and find a way to write their name on it somewhere.

Cut the picture/designs out in the given dimensions and place them together so that a picture shows on both sides. Tape them together on the sides, leaving the bottom open.

Put the pictures on the end of a chopstick (or other non-sharp, long, skinny item) and tape them onto the stick. Use as much tape as necessary to do this. Now, the child has made a tool to scratch with when the cast gets itchy.

As the end of the year comes closer, there are a lot of things to think about. The biggest on my mind right now is that soon we will be in a new health care year. This means that we will have to start paying all of the deductibles again, and worry about the money for medical bills. Unfortunately, as we all know, insurance doesn’t cover everything. To the human ear, the sounds of all five requirements blended together would sound like four diverse musical notes playing simultaneously. An additional requirement is the sound level of the harmonic tones need to be within +15dB and -15dB of the main frequency.

Other Alarms

In addition to the above requirement, the specification allows medical device manufacturers to provide more than warning alarm sounds. This means medical devices would simply play a musical melody as opposed to constantly beeping. Different musical sequences are used for different medical issues. Alarm Level Requirements

The IEC 60601-1-8 standard simply has basic requirements as to the loudness of the alarm with the only requisite being the highest priority condition being the loudest. A common recommendation is to have 3 to 6 dB levels between each priority alarm. The human ear can only recognize a pitch difference of 3dB levels and above. In general, there must be a small range between the highest and lowest priority alarm melodies so as to not distract others but be able to be informed of low conditions.

Whether your home contains small children or adults, a thermometer is an essential piece of home medical equipment. Used thermometers should be sterilized before usage, but are nevertheless safe. Thermometers are inexpensive and useful, and offer a reliable way to monitor the health of yourself or a loved one.

Body temperature is one of the primary vital signs of the human body, and indicates a variety of health conditions. It can be measured in several places, but the most common is under the tongue. Normal average body temperature is about 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit, but varies throughout the day by as much as half a degree. Elevated body temperature usually indicates the presence of a disease, because the body generates heat as it fights infection, but can also be due to skin inflammation or immunological disease. Lowered body temperature is usually caused by exposure to a cold environment or to alcohol consumption.

Thermometers come in two main varieties: digital and mercury thermometers. Mercury thermometers contain a volume of mercury in a bulb, attached to a hollow tube via a narrow opening. When placed in a patient’s body, the mercury expands and rises up through the tube. When the mercury has expanded to the maximum that the patient’s body temperature will allow, it stops rising and the thermometer is removed. As it cools, the mercury cannot fall back through the constricted entrance to the bulb, and remains in the tube to indicate the patient’s body temperature.

Mercury thermometers are not the safest choice of thermometer, however. In order to reset mercury thermometers after use, they must be shaken vigorously in order to force the mercury back down into the bulb. This poses health risks because mercury is toxic, and if the thermometer is accidentally dropped while being shaken, it may break. Exposure to liquid mercury or to mercury vapor is hazardous at best, and lethal at worst. For a safer choice of thermometer, use digital thermometers. These have largely come to replace mercury thermometers in health care settings, because they do not rely on mercury and pose less of a health risk.

Allergies occur when a person’s immune system overreacts to normally-harmless substances called allergens. Allergens may come into contact with the body in many ways, including airborne particulates, food ingredients, or insect stings. Some of the most common types of allergies are to airborne particulates, such as pollen, dust, mold, and pet dander (usually in the form of shed hair or skin particles.) These allergies can be alleviated in various ways, but one of the most convenient is through the use of an air purifier for the home. While there are many possible methods of air purification, do not assume that only one may be used at a time. Using several different types of air purifiers will give you the best chance of screening out allergenic substances.

Sleep apnea occurs in two varieties: obstructive and central. Both types involve an interruption in a person’s intake of air while asleep, which causes the body to wake up. Usually, these instances of waking are brief enough that the person does not remember them in the morning, but if they occur frequently enough during the night, they can cause symptoms of sleep deprivation. Sleep apnea usually manifests as excessive snoring, interruptions in breathing patterns while asleep, or as excessive, seemingly-inexplicable fatigue while awake.  Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles of the airway relax during sleep and occasionally block the flow of air. Muscle relaxation is normal during sleep, but does not result in a blocked airway. Obstructive sleep apnea can be caused by obesity, sleeping position, or a genetic predisposition to narrowed airways. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain’s signals to the breathing muscles become interrupted, usually due to neurological conditions or heart failure. CPAP therapy is effective at treating obstructive sleep apnea, but cannot treat the neurological basis of central sleep apnea.

A CPAP device consists of a mask that covers the mouth and/or nose, and a compressed air pump attached to the mask via a tube. The pump provides a constant stream of air to the sleeper, which increases air pressure in the throat and prevents the airway muscles from falling closed as they relax during sleep.

Because sleep apnea is a chronic condition which lasts indefinitely, CPAP therapy is likewise ongoing. Sleeping with the mask on may be a significant adjustment at first, and you may experience a few minor side effects such as skin irritation and dry nose, but these should go away after a few days. CPAP devices can be bought used, offering you an uninterrupted night’s sleep for a modest investment.

Asthma is a chronic condition wherein a person’s airway becomes inflamed and partially or entirely closes, preventing air flow. Asthma often comes in distinct “attacks”, which can be triggered by environmental conditions such as breathing tobacco smoke or polluted air, or by physical exertion, as in exercise. Asthma attacks can be frequent enough to interfere with daily life, or infrequent enough that the condition is not noticed for a very long time. Asthma can also be caused by genetic predisposition, although research into the specific genes involved is ongoing.

The most common treatment for an asthma attack is medication delivered to the lungs via an inhaler. Inhalers turn liquid medication into an aerosol, which is ejected in a burst of air and inhaled by the patient. However, some individuals are unable to use these devices, and in such cases a nebulizer can be an effective replacement. Nebulizers aerosolize medication in a similar manner to inhalers, but instead of delivering a single, concentrated burst of air which must be inhaled at just the right time, nebulizers use a mask to allow the patient to breathe in the aerosolized medication normally. This can be the most effective way to deliver aerosolized medication to very young children, or to adults experiencing severe asthma attacks; in both cases the patient is unable to coordinate their breathing with the inhaler’s burst.

Nebulizers have long been deemed an infeasible replacement for inhalers, due to the size and weight of nebulizer devices, and to the loud noise they generate. But in recent years, nebulizers have become more compact, lighter, and quieter, allowing for more flexible usage and portability. Duke University roboticists (a fancy word for engineers who specialize in robotics, and probably don’t see the Sun very often) are working on the little details of creating robots that do not need to have a physician, in order to perform basic surgeries.  These robots will never have the tremors that a physician might develop, which could lead to an incredibly safe operational record.  They could also be used for training purposes, as they will follow what they are programmed to do every time without failure or issue – a robot will never have a hangover, and it will never "just feel like" doing something erratic that could cause suffering and law suits.  From a technical standpoint, a robot is the perfect surgeon.  But then, it has no actual mind.

The physicality of having a robot that is under the direct supervision and control of a read, bona fide, experienced surgeon is one thing – if asked, most people probably wouldn’t have a problem with that kind of operation.  But how comfortable would you be with the decision making skills of a robot that is given full autonomy to open up your body, conduct an operation, then close you up?  Would you feel comfortable?

While you don’t necessarily need a masters degree in nursing to appreciate the complicated tools in the medical profession, one of the simplest ones is also one of the best for a lot of situations that you are inevitably going to find yourself getting into. If you have not yet guessed what we’re talking about, it’s simple, everyday medical scissors. Do you need to clip a baby’s umbilical cord? Snip! Do you need to handle removing a bandage, or resizing it? Snip, yet again. If there is ever a need to cut something (which only happens about ten times in a slow day), a good, sturdy pair of scissors are a godsend for you.

While there are bent ended scissors designed for getting underneath bandages easily, some of the most important features are the materials your scissors are made out of, and whether they have additional attachments to facilitate getting things done a bit more easily. Obviously, you are going to want your scissors to be made out of stainless steel, because there is no room for rust in medicine. And in some very convenient cases, there are attachments on scissors for operations like handling and unscrewing IV tubes.

Sound waves are an incredible thing.  For one thing, they can be used to tell the police when someone is speeding (which might not be convenient if you happen to be the speeder, but it is nonetheless impressive), diagnose just about any kind of illness a person might have, and even take care of malignant growths inside of an internal organ.  These are the kinds of things that one would simply never suspect that the humble sound wave might be capable of doing.  For the most part, we typically just assume that sound waves let us hear things, and leave it at that rather cursory level of accomplishment.  But sound waves can do a whole lot more than just identify the basic goings on in the outside world.

Ultrasound technology has been in existence for decades, but seems to grow more effective with each passing year.  With an ultrasound device known as Doppler ultrasound, these extremely high frequency sound waves can pick up what is going on inside of your body at the very moment that it is happening.  Rather like a cop with a radar gun, this fantastic piece of equipment can tell a trained physician or technician how quickly blood is moving through your system.  This information can be in three dimensions, show the actual movement of the blood (and the organs that move the blood around), and whether anything suspicious or potentially dangerous exists (such as a blockage, blood vessel narrowing or malformed object like a tumor or congenital defect).

Sound waves can even allow a previously barbaric process of removing malignant (cancerous) cells from the walls of a man’s prostate to be elevated into the modern age.  If you are a man whose prostate is under threat, the notion of your own cells threatening your masculine power is scary enough – but the idea of a doctor shoving a metal tool in there and scraping off those cells could be a nightmare.  A better method actually uses extremely high frequency sound waves to essentially liquify (or cavitate) the cells into getting out of there.  Yay sound.

If you or someone you know has ever been pregnant, you have undoubtedly heard of (and possibly even seen) the use of an ultrasound machine as a method of identifying how well a baby is developing inside of its mother.  An ultrasound involves using very high frequency (extremely high pitched) sound waves, in order to examine in real time what is going on within a body without having to resort to using radioactive waves like x-rays.  A trained physician can tell an awful lot about what is going on inside of a body, using only an ultrasound image.  And ever since the old two dimensional ultrasounds were replaced by three dimensional ones, and even four dimensional versions (where one can see the movement of internal organs and blood, right as it is happening), the field has opened up to an event greater extent.

The ability to evaluate the flow of blood through your body’s veins and arteries is a process referred to as a Doppler ultrasound.  There are three different types of Doppler ultrasound currently in use in the medical field: Color Doppler, Power Doppler, and Spectral Doppler.  Color Doppler uses a computer to turn the various measurements in a group of different colors, so as to visualize the speed and direction that blood flows through any given blood vessel.  Power Doppler provides a more sensitive, detailed read out of the blood flow.  It can not tell the direction of blood flow, however.  Spectral Doppler provides a graphical display of blood flow instead of a visual one, displaying how much distance blood travels per given unit of time.

With all of these sophisticated ultrasound techniques, a lot of information can be figured out.  Symptoms can be quantified, such as pain, swelling and the effects of an infection.  Any internal organ can be checked out, such as the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, bladder, eyes, thyroid, scrotum and various female parts of a patient.  Pretty much any part of a person’s body can be seen in three dimensions, during the exact moment that it is working on doing its thing.

A lot of people essentially go to hospitals to get even sicker than they originally were.  And catheters are no exception to this dubious rule.  As a catheter is essentially a foreign object sticking out of (and holding open) a human body, it is pretty much a guaranteed breeding ground for bacteria, as well as a highway by which this bacteria may have easy access to that body.  It has been speculated that of the tens of thousands of deaths due to the "super bugs" (infectious agents which are highly resistant to antibiotics, which breed like rabbits in a hospital setting), a very large number are due to catheters.  In the treatment of urinary catheters, especially, lies the potential for a great deal of infection.  It is in direct, constant contact with bodily waste, after all.

But of course, catheters can be useful, and most likely do save some lives due to their intended "drainage and irrigation" functionality.  Urinary catheterization is useful in the removal of the aforementioned body waste, and can also drain urine from the kidney by percutaneous nephrostomy.  Catheters can also collect fluid, as in cases such as abdominal abscesses.  They can also be used in veins, such as during angiograph, balloon sinuplasty, angioplasty and balloon septostomy.  A catheter can also be introduced into a vein or an artery, and used to measure blood pressure or intracranial pressure.

It is far too true in our society that more often than not, the fanciest, more ridiculously over complicated way to solve a problem is often the most favored manner. Too often, if you did not know better, you would actually think that we were making a concrete effort to inhibit our own effectiveness and progress, by passive aggressively making tons of rules and spending tons of unnecessary time and money on solutions that are of only a moderate level of effective value in combating the problem that they supposedly do. With that being the case, this is the kind of solution that pretty much blows one’s mind, from a standpoint of societal convention.

In this passive aggressive era, where it seems as if every new medical breakthrough has got to be huge, expensive and unbelievably complicated, this is the kind of innovation that all medicine cries out for more of.
