How to Properly Clean a Foot Spa

A foot spa is not only a luxurious thing to have, but for some people it’s medically necessary. When medical equipment is used daily it can get pretty dirty. It must be clean and germ-free for the next use and it’s recommended to clean them each night so they are ready in the morning. Nobody wants a disease contracted from a foot spa.

For foot spas with a whirlpool, air-jet basin or pipeless foot spa, or any other circulating spa follow these directions.

1.) Take off the filter screen, the inlet jets and all other removable parts from the basin. Clean out anything that may have been trapped within those parts or underneath them.
2.) Using a scrub brush and hot soapy water, scrub the parts until they’re all clean, following manufacturer instructions if they’ve been supplied.
3.) Rinse off the parts with clean, clear water and then replace them in the basin.
4.) Fill the basin with hot water and add the recommended EPA-registered hospital disinfectant. Follow the label instructions.
5.) Turn the basin on and allow the water with the cleaner to circulate through the system for at least 10 minutes, or whatever the label says. The whirlpool mechanism must be operating for complete disinfection of piping and all internal parts.
6.) After disinfection, drain the basin and allow it to air dry.

For basins without circulation, or simple basins:

1.) Drain the basin and clean out any visible dirt or debris.
2.) Fill the basin with hot, soapy water and scrub the bowl clean with a brush. Disinfect after washing with an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant, following the manufacturer’s guidelines. Disinfectant must stay wet on the surfaces for 10 minutes (or what the time the label says) to completely disinfect unit.
4.) Drain and rinse unit, and allow to air dry.
