Equipment Used for Speech Therapy

A speech disorder is a form of communication problem in which the ability to speak in a manner considered “normal” has been interrupted. There are many different kinds of speech disorders: stuttering, apraxia, cluttering, dysprosody, and, in extreme cases, muteness. Those suffering from a speech disorder may seek the help of a speech therapist or pathologist. These specialists may use equipment like the following:

  • Electronic fluency devices. These devices are used to treat speech impediments or improve the fluency of stutterers. Electronic fluency devices fall into different types: computerized feedback devices and altered auditory feedback devices. Computerized feedback devices use computers to increase control over phonation by providing feedback on speech. Altered auditory devices record and alter the speech of those with speech problems so they can hear their voices differently.
  • Delayed auditory device or DAF. The DAF is a type of electronic fluency device that plays back a speaker’s words a fraction of a second later. It is sometimes used to improve the fluency of stutterers.
  • Nasoscope. If nasality is a problem, a nasoscope or rhinoscope can be used to examine the inside of the nose. If there is a blockage that could be affecting speech, some nasoscopes are equipped to remove it.
  • Visi-pitch. The Visi-pitch is a versatile speech therapy device. It can graphically visualize speech in a variety of ways to better treat any specific speech disorder. It can display the frequency, pitch, and intensity of speech in real-time and provide audio playback.

As the population grows, speech pathology employment will be in increasing demand. The industry is likely to grow. Those suffering from a speech disorder should have no trouble finding a speech therapist.

Rising Cost and Medical Equipments

For the past few years, there has been a constant rise in the costof all medical equipments and devices. This has led to a lot of distress on the part of the hospital management as they cannotdo without the medical equipments even though its cost may be beyond their resources. So they opt for the next best option, which is the second hand medical equipments. The second medical equipments are usually bought from rich and large hospitals which can afford to spend a lot of money on their equipments and services. These hospitals donate or sell the medical equipments to lesser or smaller hospitals than themselvesso that the patients arriving in these places can receive proper treatment too.The second hand equipments may be in the form of MRI scanners, CT scanners, sensors and similar other equipments which are of very high quality and very expensive. These equipments may be bought by big and well known hospitals for treating their patients, and they may sell them off to other hospitals when they get a better or upgraded one, or simply donate it to another hospitalor clinic. The important features of these machines are that they can work properly and efficiently for many years without any difficulties. This is because they are made from very high quality materials and procedures to meet the demands of the medical field and to give the best treatment possible. Hence, these can work for long years.Though some of the medical professionals are skeptic about the notion of second hand equipments, the fact remains that these are used by various hospitals and clinics. Specially during the past few years when the recession has hit quite badly, these items have become quite costly and valuable which is why the hospitals opt for second hand equipments.

Used Medical Equipments

Did you know that used medical equipments are used in some hospitals and clinics? Yes, it may seem surprising, and may be a bit alarming as well. But there is no need to worry. Second hand medical equipments are quite safe, efficient and easy to work with. They give the same output as any other equipment. Some of you might jump to the conclusion that used medical equipments refers to syringes, lancets and similar materials. But this is not so. When the term “used medical equipments” pop up, just remember that they refer to scanners and sensors,or similar such equipments which do not exactly come in touch with the body so you are not at a risk of infection. The medical equipments such as the MRI scanners and similar others send frequencies into the body of the patients which track the way the body is working and give a clear sketch of how and where the problems are. By pin pointing these problems, the doctors can diagnose the treatment and the subsequent actions that have to be taken.Though there are some medical professionals who feel that second hand equipments are not up to the mark, the fact remains thatthese are designed specially to work for a long time. So you can be assured that these would work as efficiently as it did whenit was first purchased. It is designed to dot he job in an efficient and least complicated manner.During the past few years, the impact of the recession which hit the whole world ahs also affected the hospitals. They are unable to get new equipments due to high cost and lack of resources on their part to meet the costs. This has led to these hospitals getting second hand equipments for their patients so that they get the best treatment possible.

Working of Large Medical Equipments

You may see many types of medical equipments when you get into a hospital. If you have experienced a fracture then you would probably know how an x-ray machine works. All these large medical equipments have their ownway of working, thought he principles may be similar or in some cases even the same. Though it contains a lot of technical complexities, the general working are quite easy.Every machine which is used for scanning has similar way of working. Be it the MRI scanner, CT scanner or the X-ray machine, each has a few common characteristics which would help to distinguish them. Some scanners give out frequencies into the body of the patient, which hit the organs and are reflected back. The reflected frequencies are noted, that is their time difference between the sending of the frequencies and its reception. Calculations are done and various inferences can be determined from this. This is not the procedure for all equipments, just a general assessment. Some scanners use the Doppler Effect to determine the various problems or some can use other theories in physics.Another way to scan the body is to inject radioactive or similar chemicals into the body. When these chemicals enter the bloodstream, they give out radiations which are recorded by the machine and so, the image of the body is sketched into the machine. This would give an insight to the various problems in the body like malignant growths or similar problems. There are many other procedures which take place in the machines. This is how the diagnosis is done in the hospitals. These procedures are not harmful, as they have been tested and proved for safety and security of the patients who have to undergo thesetreatments. So don’t worry about the procedures if you are going to have one yourself.

Types of Medical Equipments

Although you can see different types of medical equipments on television and when you enter a hospital, there may be very few who are aware that each one belongs to a category. In fact, most of the people don’t realize that some of the branches of medicine like geriatrics, community medicine, etc don’t need special medical equipments for treating their patients.

Although it is easy to classify the medical equipments as the scanners, sensors and similar such names, they do have scientific category names assigned to them. In medicine they are categorized based on their purpose and how they serve people. Of course, when more importance is given to the technical side, these machines would have entirely different classification, like based on the way of working.

You may have seen the imaging machines, like the MRI scanners, CT scanners and many others. These are called the diagnostic equipments as they help to diagnose the problem with the patient. These equipments may also be used at home for various purposes like for controlling diabetes mellitus. The medical monitors are used to track down a patient’s vital conditions, like the ECG, EEG, etc.

Another group of major equipments are the life support equipments. These are, as the name suggests used to support the life of a patient who is too weak to do it themselves, like breathing which can be aided by the ventilator, to he dialysis unit which helps to eliminate wastes in the body. The therapeutic equipments like medical lasers, infusion pumps and similar ones are used for therapeutic purposes.

Lastly, you may classify the equipments used in the laboratories for various testing and analysis as the medical laboratory equipments. So you can see that all the medical equipments belongs to a class of its own, sometimes based on the purpose or function, and at other times based on their working.

Mobiles and Medical Equipments

The medical equipments are machines which are designed to save the life of a patient and keep him fit and healthy. It prolongs life and eases the pain and discomfort of the patients quite easily. From the small pacemakers to the large scanners, the medical equipment has functions and purposes of its own for which it is used on the patient.

You may have seen the signs in the hospitals indicating you to switch off your mobile phones. A few years back mobile phones were strictly to be kept out of the hospital but now, the rule has been more relaxed. Do you know why this is so? What do mobile phones have to do with the hospital and why are they considered so dangerous?

All the major medical equipments work on electricity. They function with the help of electric and magnetic fields. They give out radiation of certain frequencies when they work and they are sometimes electro-mechanical devices where the mechanical movements of the patient are converted into the equivalent electrical signals.

The mobile phones are devices which work at a particular frequency and when it comes in contact with the magnetic fields of the medical equipments, interference occurs which can be seen by the fluctuation of the needle on the machine or the distortion of the image on the screen.

Interference is a very dangerous phenomenon when relating to the medical equipments because it may interrupt a vital function taking place in the patient’s treatment, sometimes even leading to death in severe cases. This is the reason why you weren’t allowed to have mobile phones in the areas like the ICU, operation theatre, etc.

Today, the latest technologies have been able to stop the interference process in many types of equipments. Yet, it would be safe for the people around you in a hospital if you keep the mobile phone switched off.
