Advanced Medical Equipment for Health Care

You could consider that the inspiration for advanced medical equipment has come right from “Star Trek.” In that popular science fiction series of television shows and movies, all it took is a quick scan from a “tricorder” for the ship’s doctors to know exactly what was wrong with a patient. Then it was a zap of a “hypo-spray” needle or some micro laser surgery and the crew members were ready to boldly go where they needed to go. Today, many of those sci-fi innovations are becoming a reality.

It’s hard to go a week without hearing about some new technological advancement breaking in healthcare news. Recently at the German Metrology Institute, the world’s most powerful magnetic resonance imaging system was brought on line. This new MRI machine is providing the sharpest images yet of a person’s internal organs. For the first test run of this new piece of medical equipment, images of a person’s heart were captured in amazing detail. Doctors were able to clearly see a beating heart and distinguish between blood vessels and muscle tissue. This cutting-edge device generates power that is 150,000 times the magnetic field of Earth and is going to greatly improve cardiac diagnosis, especially in emergency situations.

At the Nanorobotics Laboratory at Polytechnique Montreal, the medical researchers are finding a more effective way of delivering medicine to attack cancer cells through the use of nanomedicine. Essentially, these are extremely tiny micro machines the size of cells that can be programmed to target specific cells without harming the surrounding healthy tissues. Remember the movie “Fantastic Voyage?” It’s like that, but without the tiny people!

Importance of Heart

The heart and the brain are two of the most important organs of the body which keeps it alive. The heart pumps blood to rest of the body and the brain activates the all the senses and makes you aware of various things around you. It also controls various functions like the memory, perception and many more without which you can say that you are not alive.

It might seem that the brain has a lot of work to do and it is more important that the heart. Yet, it is seen that a person can live even though his brain is clinically dead but with the heart functioning properly. These people are declared as brain dead but they keep on living as the heart refuses to back out and stop its functioning.

Now you can rethink and say that the heart is more important than the brain. Perhaps it is because of similar reasons that the heart is considered to a symbol of unending dedication and work. There are many people who have heart problems, which make them undergo a lot of different types of surgeries and transplanting.

The day artificial heart transplant became a reality was a day to rejoice indeed. Many people have lost their lives in the past due to lack of proper treatments or transplants. Today, most of the diseases related to the heart can be curbed. Another heart related equipment is the pacemaker. Though the heart has a natural pacemaker on it, in some people this becomes weak which affect the blood pumping mechanism.

Hence, an artificial pacemaker is inserted into the heart which would help it to get back to normal pace. Your heart is what keeps you alive and fit. If it gets fatigues you can be sure that a great deal of problems is coming your way. So try to stay fit and eat healthy.

A Win-Win for Patients and Doctors – Nebulizers on Loan

Many times a health problem can mean some sort of machine, monitor or tester needs to be attained by the patient. Since people don’t usually have spare nebulizers and other medical equipment lying around, the patient in need has to find one. In big cities that isn’t a problem, but in small towns or rural communities it might be a road trip to find one to rent.

Many times, and this is from experience, a nebulizer is needed to heal from something very contagious (bronchitis). And there’s COPD, – a killer and so many have it now that many doctor’s offices are buying their own nebulizers and equipment for patient use. Some companies even have them on loan to clinics for patients who need them.

A Win/Win is Loaning Used Medical Equipment

The patient signs a pre-written contract that makes the patient liable for theft or damage to the machine, and then they get to take it home while they’re using it. When they’re done, they call the company that loaned them to the clinic and that company will come and get it from the patient. The patient gets to use it free, as well, so it’s a win/win situation.

It’s a great system, as long as a meth addict or thief doesn’t get to take one home. Clinics that have their own machines are few, and those few have few machines, as well. It really won’t work if people aren’t honest and reliable. But it sure can help the person who needs to use it. In this patient’s case, it made the difference between breathing and hardly breathing.

Sometimes the clinic has various crutches, boot casts, testers and other things that can be borrowed. If one of these, or other, items are cluttering the closet, consider donating them to a local clinic.

Vision Prepaid can Help With Medical Expenses

As the end of the year comes closer, there are a lot of things to think about. The biggest on my mind right now is that soon we will be in a new health care year. This means that we will have to start paying all of the deductibles again, and worry about the money for medical bills. Unfortunately, as we all know, insurance doesn’t cover everything. We do have a flex spending account, but even that doesn’t always cover it all. What if something big happens, and we end up with more in medical bills than we can cover with insurance and flex?

A friend of mine told me the other day about her solution to this problem. They have a Vision prepaid card that they use specifically for this situation. They add extra money that they have, when they have it. Then, if it’s needed to cover medical expenses later, the money is there. If they are lucky enough not to have to use it for doctor or hospital bills through the year, they have some extra money to splurge with.

I think I might have to try this myself. When we talked about it as a family, everyone else thought it was a good idea, as well. I know that it would definitely take a weight off of my shoulders. It is really stressful to think about what could happen, and the possibility of not having the money to cover it. Medical expenses are one of the few bills that I worry about the most, and having a back up plan in place is one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a long time. Not to mention, if we don’t end up having to use it, I could really use a new wardrobe!

Laundry Services for Medical Facilities

Hospitals and clinics that have large staffs rarely have the facilities to clean all of the scrubs and uniforms that are used. It is important, however, for these organizations to ensure that all uniforms are appropriately cleaned. Dirty uniforms and scrubs not only reflect poorly on the organization; they can also spread germs that cause illness.

This is one of the reasons that many hospitals choose to hire cleaning services to wash uniforms for them. Rather than relying on employees to wash their own scrubs, they provide cleaning for them. That way they know that the scrubs haven’t just been lying on the ground next to some sweaty TapouT shirt for the past few days.

It might seem ridiculous to those outside of the medical industry, but this is a serious concern for hospital administrators. Soiled scrubs can spread disease to patients that already have fragile immune systems. The hospital administrators are, therefore, willing to pay the expense of laundering the clothes.

Employees have easy access to scrubs and uniforms, often from vending machines or storage closets, so that they can change whenever they are dirty. The convenience benefits them as well as the hospital and patients. Once they have changed out of their work clothes, they drop the scrubs into a designated laundry basket. The uniforms are then collected by the cleaning company and returned freshly laundered.

Hospitals spend quite a bit of money on these services, but they also get to save money by ordering in bulk. Hospitals not only need cleaning services for their scrubs and uniforms, but their towels, linens and curtains as well. At the end of the day, the hospital or clinic can save money by outsourcing the work to another company. That way they don’t have to hire additional employees or purchasing industrial washing machines.
